How to Trap Raccoons in Jacksonville, FL

Request Wildlife Control

The increasing development in Jacksonville might actually benefit raccoons. Found throughout Florida, their natural habitat has plenty of trees and a reliable source of water. The range for raccoons is between one to three miles, but they can tolerate a reduction in territory if food is available.

Incredibly adaptable, urbanization and agriculture provide ample food sources, shelter options, and a decrease in predators1.

Hollows in trees are the natural denning site for raccoons. Excellent climbers, dens can be on ground level or sixty feet high. Raccoons have no problem getting onto your roof and then finding a way into your atticOnce inside your attic, raccoons create a nuisance, damage your property, and introduce diseases to your family.

Jacksonville Raccoon in Attic

In this Jacksonville home, we found a raccoon entry hole under the soffit. Raccoons are strong enough to tear open soffits and climb into the attic.

Trapping a Raccoon in Attic

Live trapping is one of the most effective and humane ways to remove a raccoon. Raccoon trapping requires a secure and sturdy live trap.

Keep 12 inches around the trap clear. Raccoons have extremely dexterous front paws with five long, tapered fingers and long nails. Raccoons destroy everything they can get their hands on when trapped.

Secure the trap and protect the animal. If you set a trap on the roof, make sure it is secure! Unless the trap can be stabilized, it is not safe for a raccoon to be in a trap on a pitched roof. You should use a trap that has some covering to protect the animal from the elements.

Raccoon in Attic Removal

There are other raccoon control tactics. If a mother has created a den with juveniles in your attic, raccoon eviction spray or predator urine might encourage the raccoons to leave. However, they might simply relocate to another part of your attic.

One-way doors or valves can be effective. It allows the raccoon to leave but not return. Do not use this method if raccoon juveniles are present! The mother will do everything in her power to reunite with her young or the kits will die.

Raccoon Control on Roof in Jacksonville, FL

Raccoons on your roof are still problematic even if they haven’t accessed your attic.

  • Raccoon feces can damage your roof and spread diseases.
  • Raccoons scrambling over shingles can dislodge them.
  • Females are known to destroy soffits, fascia boards, shingles, vents, and insulation to establish denning sites.
  • Once a raccoon creates or enlarges a hole in the rooftop, it becomes an easy pathway to the attic.

Raccoons will not nest on your roof. So if you limit accessibility to your roof, you can solve the raccoon problem.

  • Trim trees and branches to eliminate access to your roof
  • Install metal sheeting at the corner of your house so raccoons cannot climb up your house
