Wildlife Solutions in Charleston, SC
Your home is a great source of food, water, and shelter for wildlife. Wild animals tend to avoid people, but you’ll notice the evidence left behind from an animal in your house. You will likely notice strange sounds and unusual odors but you might see animal droppings and physical damage to your home. Safe, humane removal helps keep people, animals, and property safe.
Charleston’s humid, subtropical climate means animals can stay active nearly year-round. The average temperature in winter is around 50ºF. The coastal habitat is made up of marshes, forested intertidal wetlands, and tidal mudflats. Because most of Charleston is at sea level, many homes are elevated on pilings to avoid periodic coastal flooding. We often find animals building nests under Charleston houses. More rural areas like James Island and Johns Island also have plenty of beautiful vegetation, which provides easy access to attics for animals like rats and squirrels.
Of the 250 tracked species in Charleston county, you are most likely to encounter raccoons, bats, armadillos, snakes, and rodents like rats, mice, and squirrels in homes.
Charleston is one of the fastest-growing cities. As the city continues to grow animals adapted to urban and suburban life will continue to take advantage of resources left by humans.
Wildlife Control in Charleston
Charleston Wildlife Removal Services
Step 1: Inspection
Our comprehensive wildlife removal process starts with a whole home inspection. We start the inspection by asking questions so we can understand exactly what you’re experiencing. We want to address any signs of wildlife you have noticed like hearing strange sounds or smelling unusual odors. To prepare for the inspection consider these questions:- Have you seen an animal around your home or property?
- Why do you suspect you have an animal?
- When are you hearing noises and what do they sound like?
- Are there any odors in your house and if so, where?
- How long have you been experiencing the problem?
Step 2: The Plan
With the results of the inspection, we share our findings with you. And share how we will solve the problem for you. Although each wildlife control plan is unique to the home, it may include live trapping, direct capture, one-way doors, or deterrents. Before any work begins, we make sure that you are comfortable with the steps being taken to resolve the nuisance wildlife issue.Step 3: Get To Work
If you approve of the plan, we will set up a time to put it into place. After the animal removal has taken place, we will repair any damage caused by the critter. Additionally, we will apply sanitizing and ectoparasite agents to the affected areas. Once the plan is executed, your home will be returned to its normal condition.Step 4: Full Home Exclusion
Wildlife removal is just one part of the plan. Many plans include wildlife control measures to prevent any future problems. This is often completed by installing a full home exclusion. The goal is to create physical barriers to prevent animals from entering your home in the future. A few possible exclusion techniques include gable vents, ridge vents, crawlspace vents, roof returns, and plumbing stacks. With the appropriate exclusions in place, you can rest easy knowing that a long-term solution is in place to protect your home from nuisance wildlife.Guarantee and Warranty
Once installed, Trutech offers a one-year warranty on full home exclusions. Plus, there is a 100% satisfaction guarantee. If you aren’t satisfied with the initial work, Trutech will send out a service manager to inspect the work completed and make any necessary adjustments. Some Geographic Restrictions
Wildlife Removal in Charleston
Squirrel Removal
Squirrels are delightful little creatures… until they wind up inside of your house. Squirrels impact your quality of life because they are active from dawn to dusk.
The eastern gray squirrel, fox squirrels, and southern flying squirrel all call the Lowcountry home, but the eastern gray squirrel truly thrives in urban and suburban habitats.
Squirrels are active during the day so you might hear squealing, running, or gnawing early in the morning. Squirrels constantly gnaw which damages attic insulation, frays electrical wire, and destroys house structures.
Squirrels can impact your quality of life. They are active from dawn to dusk. The most common sign of squirrels is the sound of them scurrying early in the morning.
To effectively get rid of squirrels, the wildlife technician will employ a variety of tactics such as live trapping, one-way doors, deterrents, and direct capture.
Armadillo Control
Armadillos present little danger to people. The greatest danger they pose is to your landscaping. Controlling the animal can protect your lawn and garden and the integrity of structures like decks and driveways on your property.
Capturing an armadillo with a live trap can be difficult. Habitat modification and exclusions are extremely effective in removing armadillos from your lawn. Water your garden beds in the morning because armadillos prefer loose soil. Armadillos are nocturnal, and the soil will have dried out by the mid-afternoon.
Bird Control
The most common nuisance birds in South Carolina are crows, pigeons, red-winged blackbirds, starlings, and woodpeckers. Birds can be noisy, messy, and destructive. Effective bird control depends on species and legalities. There are nearly 500 bird species in South Carolina, but only non-native birds to North America like pigeons, starlings, and house sparrows can legally be caught and trapped.
Effective bird control includes habitat modification, exclusions, repellents, and trapping. Trapping birds are difficult; prevention and exclusion are much more effective to get rid of nuisance birds.
Rodent Removal
Rodents will always be an issue in Charleston because of the proximity to water and the unique architectural style in Charleston. Rodents like rats and mice can damage your house, spread diseases, and contaminate your food.
Rodents damage your home and spread diseases. Setting a few traps is not an effective rodent pest control method. A litter is usually between five to twelve, and one rat can have up to seven litters in a year!
Our rodent pest control specialists in Jacksonville will work with you to get rid of mice and rat problems and help advise you on proper rodent control so that you no longer need to worry about these destructive pests.
The standard trapping duration is normally 5-14 days. Rat exterminators cannot offer a permanent solution. An integrated trapping and exclusion strategy is essential to solving rodent infestation. Rodents can gnaw through virtually any house material, and mice only need a hole the size of a dime. Trutech offers recurring rodent services to maintain a rodent-free home.
Snake Removal
Finding a snake in your home can be a jarring experience. There are 38 snake species in South Carolina, only six of which are venomous. If you leave the snake alone, it will leave you alone.
Unlike other nuisance wildlife, snakes cannot create an entry hole. They take advantage of existing gaps and holes.
Snakes usually enter your home in search of food like rodents. During our inspection, we will also look for signs of a rodent infestation. The wildlife technician will help remove the snake safely and help uncover any other wildlife infestations.
Opossum Removal
Opossums are not prone to aggression. They pose the greatest threat to your garden, but they will eat almost anything. Opossums do carry diseases so do not approach them haphazardly. Opossums will also look for safe nesting areas under decks, inside garages, or under foundations. Sealing ground-level entrances and burying wire mesh are effective ways to exclude opossums.
Raccoon Removal
You are most likely to experience a raccoon problem in your house from March until August. Female raccoons are looking for safe places to have their young. The peak breeding season is January and February. After a 63 gestation period, the young stay in their den for up to three months, and the family stays together until fall.
Raccoons are nocturnal. One of the most common signs of a raccoon infestation is loud, strange noises at night.
Raccoons only need a gap the size of a grapefruit to squeeze into your home, but they are capable of creating much larger holes. They can tear shingles off roofs and tear apart soffits. They also cause significant damage to your home.
Cage traps are the most effective raccoon removal technique. Long-term solutions include exclusion techniques by sealing any entry points.
Bat Removal
South Carolina is home to 14 species of bats. In Lowcountry, property owners may discover bats roosting in attics, using these shelters to give birth. Bats have pups between mid-May to mid-August, but June is the most likely time.
Once the young can survive on their own, the wildlife technician seals the entry points and installs a bat valve. Once the valve is installed, your house will be bat free in 3-7 days.
Mole Removal
Large populations are rare, as no more than three to five moles inhabit the same acre of land. Even so, they are capable of digging tunnels up to 100 feet long in a single day, and their voracious appetites mean they are constantly on the move in search of food.
The use of mole traps is a valid control option but requires the knowledge and expertise of wildlife professionals. You can waste time and energy targeting abandoned mole tunnels.
Moles can be kept away from garden plots by installing fencing buried at least a foot into the ground, as well.

Frequently Asked Questions
District manager Ian Vosseler answers your most pressing questions about nuisance wildlife in Charleston.
Homeowners in Charleston most commonly are faced with rats, bats, squirrels, snakes, raccoons, and armadillos.
The most common spaces we find critters are within our customers’ attics or crawl spaces. We also handle critters like moles and armadillos, which can cause lawn and foundation damage.
All critters we handle in Charleston are present year-round since the temperatures do not drop very low during the winter; however, snake and armadillo activity is less common during the colder months.
Raccoons and bats are nocturnal critters, so they are heard during the night. Raccoons are very loud and can be vocal especially if kits are present. If bats are present, you may hear squeaking noises at night.
Squirrels and rats will sound similar; if they are present, you’ll likely hear scattering, scratching, or gnawing noises. Squirrels are most active at dusk and dawn while rats are nocturnal, so they will be heard during the night.
There is no one-size-fits-all solution; each job requires a custom approach. We inspect every home and build a custom plan to resolve any wildlife problems. We use a variety of techniques including cage traps, direct capture, one-way valves, and deterrents. Exclusion techniques are the most effective way to get rid of animals.
We provide customized solutions to each individual customer so that we may solve the issue as quickly, efficiently, and cost-effectively as possible. The size of the house, type of animal, number of nuisance animals, and length of time of infestation affect the estimated price of wildlife removal.
An estimate may change based on the amount of animal activity or work needed to be done. All estimates are finalized with an exact price before any work begins.
Our goal is to remove any wildlife as humanely as possible — often that means catching and releasing the animal.
Trutech® does not hire subcontractors for animal removal services. We employ expert technicians who are provided ongoing education and training in all aspects of animal control and removal. Many of our technicians hold degrees in Wildlife Biology, Entomology (insects), Ornithology (birds) or Herpetology (reptiles), some with Masters degrees in their specialty field.
