Nuisance Wildlife Removal in Southern Virginia

The Piedmont of Virginia has ideal conditions for a variety of wildlife. Southern Virginia's hot summers and mild winters allow animals to thrive.

In Virginia, wildlife is not the property of one individual or the city, county, state government. If you have nuisance wildlife on your property, the homeowner is responsible for the humane removal of the problem animal.

Trutech Wildlife Service provides humane wildlife removal. Our service starts with a thorough inspection of your property to identify the animal. Based on the inspection, the wildlife technician develops a comprehensive plan to remove and control the wildlife. Finally, once the animal has been removed, we will repair any animal damage and prevent any future infestations.

Our expert wildlife technicians will:

  • Remove all unwelcome wildlife from your home
  • Repair and disinfect damages in your house caused by the animals
  • Protect your home by securing any potential entry points.

Typical Wildlife in Southern Virginia

Squirrel Removal

Of the five species of squirrels in Virginia, the gray squirrel and the Southern flying squirrel are most likely to enter your home in Southside Virginia. Squirrels nest in tree cavities but will search for shelter in attics due to habitat loss. Squirrels will most likely enter your home in spring and autumn but they are active year-round.

In the spring and autumn squirrels search for a safe nest to give birth. Flying squirrels have been found in groups as large as fifty during the winter. Gray squirrels are active during the day. Flying squirrels are nocturnal and very vocal.

Both species damage your home by constantly gnawing, building nests, and leaving their droppings. Do not keep a squirrel as a pet or relocate a trapped squirrel. Both are illegal in Virginia. Effective squirrel control includes trapping, removing, and preventing squirrel infestations.

Raccoon Removal

Raccoons are found throughout Southern Virginia and live close to a body of water. Raccoons will enter your house in search of food. It is illegal to trap and relocate a raccoon in Virginia.

Raccoons can wreak havoc trying to gain entry to your home and cause significant damage creating a den in your attic. They can cause a mess of garbage and destroy home gardens and birdfeeders.  Because they are nocturnal, you’ll most likely hear a loud thumbing at night if you have an attic.

Live trapping is the most common removal technique and exclusion techniques include securing food sources and closing any entry points.

Bat Removal

There are seventeen species of bats in Virginia. The most likely bat species to enter roost in an attic in Richmond are the Big Brown Bat, Evening Bat, Little Brown Bat, and Brazilian free-tailed bat.

If you have bats in the attic, do not trap them! Roosting bats can leave large piles of bat guano which can spread fungal diseases. Three bat species are considered Federally threatened and another three are Federally endangered. It is illegal to "transport, release or relocate a bat anywhere other than the property it was caught on" (source) and "poison any animal... on your property" (source)

Proper bat control focuses on exclusion work. Once the young can survive on their own, the wildlife technician seals the entry points and installs a bat valve. Once the valve is installed, your house will be bat-free in 3-7 days.

Rodent Removal

Rats have plagued residents in Southern Virginia as long as people have lived here. A rodent infestation can damage your home and harm your health. Rats and mice constantly gnaw and will gnaw on anything they can sink their teeth into. Rats can spread a variety of diseases.

A rat or mouse problem can quickly get out of control. A female rat could birth six litters a year with five to ten pups in each litter.  The best way to control rats and mice is to control the population. Trapping and removing individual animals will not solve your problem. Whatever attracted that trapped rat or mouse, will attract other rodents.

Contact Trutech to schedule a comprehensive rodent control solution.

Snake Removal

Virginia has thirty native species of snakes, and only three snake species are venomous.

Generally, the most harm snakes inflict is scaring someone.  If there’s a snake in your house, you need to call a professional. A snake is in your home for one reason- food. If you have a snake problem, you likely have another wildlife pest problem. The wildlife technician will help remove the snake safely and help uncover any other wildlife pest infestations.

Skunk & Opossum Removal

Both species are quite adaptable to urban and suburban settings. Skunks and opossums are attracted to food around your house. Keep trash secure and do not leave pet food outside can prevent the animals from entering your property or home.

Opossums are not prone to aggression. They pose the greatest threat to your garden, but they will eat almost anything. Opossums do carry diseases so do not approach them haphazardly. Opossums will also look for safe nesting areas under decks, inside garages, or under foundations. Sealing ground-level entrances and burying wire mesh are effective ways to exclude opossums.

Because skunks prefer dark places, people and pets can unexpectedly discover a skunk only to get sprayed. If you suspect a skunk, do not try to trap it yourself.

Wildlife in Your Southern Virginia Yard

Wildlife in your lawn and garden can be as disruptive as an animal in your home. Generally, these animals pose little danger to people. Burrowing animals can damage your home by digging under homes, porches, sheds, and driveways.

Typical lawn invaders include chipmunks, skunks, opossums, moles, voles, and groundhogs. Unsecured garbage cans and pet food outside attract animals to your yard. Effective wildlife control in your yard includes habitat modification like removing food, debris, and exclusion work like burying hardware cloth around the home foundation.

If your yard has available resources that attracted wildlife, those animals might try to enter your home. Protecting your yard can be the first step in protecting your home.

When to Call an Wildlife Service Technician

As soon as you suspect you have a nuisance wildlife problem, contact a professional. Animals like raccoons, squirrels, and rodents create nests in your attic out of the insulation. Rodents constantly gnaw and chew through electrical cords, support beams, and more. Skunks, opossums, groundhogs, and chipmunks could burrow under porches, sheds, and foundations. Ignoring a nuisance will lead to a greater cost to repair the damage.

Keep in mind, wildlife in your yard is not necessarily a cause for concern. If you see a nocturnal animal, don't immediately assume it has rabies. Coyotes, raccoons, skunks, opossums, foxes are commonly seen during the day in the suburban and urban setting especially if there is a food source attracting them.
