San Antonio residents are more likely to come across striped skunks than other species. This variety has two white stripes running along its back. Often found near water or along streams, the hooded skunk has similar markings but is characterized by its soft, long fur.
In San Antonio, skunks typically invade your yard in search of food and a safe place to burrow. Sheds and porches make ideal locations for a skunk to burrow. Those burrows become a serious problem if a skunk digs under the foundation of your home.
Because they prefer dark places, people and pets can unexpectedly discover a skunk only to get sprayed. If you suspect a skunk, do not try to trap it yourself. Not only do skunks carry rabies, but you are also likely to get sprayed. Removing food supplies is one of the most effective ways to prevent a skunk from entering your property.
Raccoons will enter your house in search of food. When they discover an acceptable food source, they will set up denning sites. If you hear the raccoons in your attic at night, it's likely you already have a raccoon den.
Raccoons can wreak havoc trying to gain entry to your home and cause significant damage creating a den in your attic. They can cause a mess of garbage and destroy home gardens and bird feeders. Because they are nocturnal, you’ll most likely hear a loud thumbing at night if you have an attic.
Before you spend money on a raccoon trap, take care of the raccoon problem at the source. Live trapping is the most common removal technique and exclusion techniques include securing food sources and closing any entry points.
Bats in San Antonio are a big deal. The world’s largest bat colony is just north of the city in Bracken Caves, where an astonishing 20 million of these animals are estimated to roost. Texas bills itself as the country’s battiest state, with 32 of the 47 domestic species living here.
With such large numbers of bats in San Antonio, a colony of bats in your attic can cause problems. The accumulation of guano can weaken the structure of your home and cause respiratory diseases.
Bats are protected by federal and state regulations. It is illegal to kill bats with chemicals, and you should not exclude bats during the maternity season. The maternity season usually lasts from spring to late summer.
Once the young can survive on their own, the wildlife technician seals the entry points (bats need only a small gap of three-eighths of an inch in diameter to gain access to attics) and installs a bat valve. Once the valve is installed, your house will be bat free in 3-7 days.
Rat Pest Control
A rat or mouse problem can quickly get out of control and rat traps are only a temporary solution. Instead, call Trutech and let us get right to work.
An integrated trapping and exclusion strategy is essential for rodent pest control. To effectively get rid of rats or mice you need to control the population. Female rats can have six litters in one year.
The standard trapping duration is normally 5-14 days. The wildlife technician will determine the best type of trap, placement of trap, and the best bait to use. The technician will repair and reinforce any potential entry points to keep rodents out. Rats leave pheromone trails that other rats can follow into your home.
There are four venomous snakes in San Antonio -- the copperhead, rattlesnake, cottonmouth, and coral snake. Generally, the most harm snakes inflict is scaring someone. Most snake bites happen when someone takes unnecessary or foolish risks with a snake. Snakes have an essential role in the Texas environment so please do not kill a snake.
If there’s a snake in your house, you need to call a professional. A snake is in your home for one reason- food. If you have a snake problem, you likely have another wildlife pest problem. The wildlife technician will help remove the snake safely and help uncover any other wildlife pest infestations.
The fox squirrel is the most common tree squirrel in San Antonio. Squirrels are active during the day so you might hear squealing, running, or gnawing early in the morning. Squirrels' teeth never stop growing so they constantly gnaw and chew damaging attic insulation, fraying electrical wire, and destroying house structures.
To effectively remove squirrels, the wildlife technician will employ a variety of tactics such as live trapping, one-way doors, deterrents, and direct capture.

Q&A with your local branch manager:
What are some of the most common wildlife issues that homeowners face in your area?
The most common would be the raccoon, followed by squirrel, rat, skunk, armadillo, bat, opossum, and dead animals. Usually, the homeowner hears noises or digging in their yards that alert them to a potential problem. From time to time the homeowner will see the animal enter the home or have a neighbor point out a hole. We do receive calls for insects, lizards, geckos, and frogs. We also receive calls for simple exclusion work, to secure a home for preventative measures, or new homeowners wanting an inspection to see if there are any entry points. It’s not uncommon to get a call after someone’s alarm system stops working, door bell stops, lights flicker or go out, other service industries are called out for repairs, water leaks, or odors, stains, or accumulation of flies appear. Sprinkler heads also are damaged from time to time because of wildlife activity. We get calls when homeowners see droppings in their attics or yards. We always advise the owners of the potential health hazards associated with fecal matter and the unseen urine and our solution to this issue.
How do the seasons affect wildlife activity in your area?
From December to February skunks are courting and we receive a high number of urgent calls. April to May the female skunks are denning, so again we get a number of calls. Most armadillo calls that we’ve noticed are in the Fall, about September to January, although year round. Bats for the most part are migratory and come into our areas from March to September. We do have year round populations, but those that remain have been here for years in isolated areas of downtown and the surrounding cave systems. Raccoons and squirrels activity is high during the Spring when they are mating and birthing, and again in the Fall and Winter when the temperatures drop. Rats & mice are a constant issue for San Antonio residents and businesses, as are opossums and dead animals. When food is plentiful or temperatures are not fluctuating, animals are content outside of residential and corporate structures.
Any prevention tips for residents in your area?
We would advise homeowners to inspect their homes thoroughly and regularly. Weather in Texas causes warping, shrinkage, expansion, shifting; these changes could open the home up to wildlife. If it’s a questionable gap, crack, crevice, or hole, it should probably be secured. Even weep holes, eave vents, and various roof vents could be secured better than manufacturer install. Make sure siding is secure, transitions from one material to another are secure and finished, garage door corners are secured, roof returns are flush, weather stripping on doors are in good condition. Even decks and pool or patio slabs should be inspected. Decks should be flush to the ground or skirted so they appear flush. Watch for digging around these areas.
When should homeowners call Trutech?
If they are new to the home, they should call a professional that will inspect the home from a wildlife point of view. We would also advise homeowners not to get on ladders or walk on roofs to inspect themselves. We are insured for these dangers and the homeowners are not; we’d rather assume these risks. If noises are heard, electrical oddities occur, strange odors, respiratory issues become constant, or stains appear, while its already too late, the homeowners should call Trutech Wildlife Removal. If other service companies notice animal-related evidence or the possibility of, the homeowner should call our services.
