Q&A with your local branch manager:
What are some of the most common wildlife issues that homeowners face in your area?
We have 3 lakes in our immediate area. These water sources attract a lot of the local wildlife. One of the animals we often see getting into homes on the lakes are flying squirrels. They are small so they can get into many different areas of a home. They mostly stay in the attic, but sometimes can accidentally wander into the living area. Our lakes and streams also attract beavers. These industrious creatures chew up trees and use them to dam streams and creeks and cause flooding. Our landscape trees are vulnerable because we tend to use the trees that beavers prefer to eat. Skunks are also common in our area. Not only do they spray outside causing an odor they can also get into crawl spaces through broken ground vents, open access doors, and even air conditioning units that are improperly attached to homes. This can be an issue if they spray under the house because it can make the entire home smell like skunk.
How do the seasons affect wildlife activity in your area?
Seasons play a big role in what animal will be getting into our homes. Squirrels get into attics to build nest and have their young in the fall and winter. Bats migrate south in the winter and they come back in the spring and summer to roost in gable vents and attics. Snakes are seen more by homeowners in the summer. They can be seen hanging around outside sunning on cement or asphalt driveways. We also often find them in attics. In winter, snakes are often found in crawl spaces trying to stay warm and searching for their favorite food, rats. Most other animals in our area are dealt with all year long and the seasons do not bother them.
Any prevention tips for residents in your area?
The best prevention tip is to eliminate the food source. Keep garbage cans closed with a lid so raccoons and opossums can’t climb in and scatter trash. If they are attracted to the home it is easier for them to find a way in. Keep bird feeders away from the home and keep the fallen seeds cleaned up so rats, squirrels, and chipmunks aren’t attracted to the area. We can also prevent animals from entering by sealing certain areas of the home. Sealing can prevent bats, squirrels, snakes and other animals from getting into the attic. Making sure ground vents and crawlspace doors are secure will help keep animals out from underneath the home. Having a monthly pest control service will also help prevent ants, roaches, and other insects from entering your home.
When should homeowners call Trutech?
Homeowners should call Trutech as soon as they see, hear, or smell something. The quicker we get on site the better chance we have of taking care of the issue before it causes a major problem. Many times, customers wait to see if it will go away on its own, but waiting can make it worse. Squirrels in the attic can have babies which may lead to them falling into wall voids and not being able to get out. Bats will defecate in attics and the guano can eventually cause repository problems if not taking care of soon enough. If an animal dies in the wall and we’re not called out in the beginning it’s harder to locate the animal and may result in having to leave it in the wall which will cause odor, staining on the walls or ceiling, and bugs to enter the home. Calling at the first sign of a wildlife issue in your home is the best time to start taking care of the problem.
