Wildlife Problems in Tampa
Snakes are a common nuisance in Tampa, FL. While homeowners can benefit from the pests’ habits of eating insects and rodents, snakes can be dangerous. Some snakes have the ability to climb up walls and enter attics, especially if there are rodents in the attic. Many species of snakes in the Tampa area are venomous, but even those that are not can deliver painful, bacteria-laden bites.
Rats and mice in Tampa congregate near trash in yards and garages but will also come into homes to find shelter. Upon making their way into kitchens and pantries, rodents contaminate ten times as much food as they eat with their hair, feces, and urine. Diseases spread by these pests include rat-bite fever, leptospirosis, and rabies. In addition, Norway rats compromise the structural integrity of homes by burrowing under them, while roof rats that nest in attics and wall voids attract insects. Mice build nests in even harder-to-reach areas, as their small size allows them to squeeze through cracks too tiny for rats.

Q&A with your local branch manager:
What are some of the most common wildlife issues that homeowners face in your area?
The Tampa area is home to a wide variety of wildlife, ranging from rats and raccoons to squirrels and snakes. The most common issue present in the Tampa area is the increasing rodent population. Due to the development of the metropolitan area, the presence of natural predators has been diminished which has allowed the rodent population to grow and thrive. This includes rats as well as gray squirrels. If proper exclusion (seal up) is not performed on a residence, these animals only need a small space to gain entrance into the house or attic space.
How do the seasons affect wildlife activity in your area?
Florida as a state experiences very mild seasonal changes, and Tampa follows suit. The two major wildlife “seasons” that are present here in Tampa relate to temperature but more importantly to animal reproduction. Before discussing these it would be wise to point out that since rats are continually reproducing, they do not necessarily follow these seasons as closely as some other species. The first season would occur roughly between September to February. This is the squirrel reproductive season in which they are seeking shelter and a place to nest and raise their young. The second season includes the months of January-May, in which the area experiences the reproduction and population increase of raccoons. Like the squirrels, they will be looking for somewhere quiet and safe to both have and raise their young. Unfortunately for both species, attics provide them with the necessities required for their birthing and nurturing needs.
It is also valid to point out that while most of our snake population in Florida is non-venomous, we do have 4 species that are venomous. During the warmer months of our climate (June-September), snake sightings and activity increase dramatically due to reproduction as well as the fact that since they are cold blooded animals, they thrive on the opportunity to move and hunt in warmer temperatures.
Any prevention tips for residents in your area?
As a homeowner the most important thing you can do to prevent wildlife issues is to make sure your home is sealed and secure from possible outside entry. Preventative measures are always better than reactive measures and most of the time are more cost effective as well. An inspection of your home performed by a licensed wildlife removal specialist from Trutech can identify both current animal activity as well as potential problem areas needing to be sealed. A list of other proactive measures includes making sure trees and landscape are kept trimmed and away from the roof and/or house, making sure garbage cans are closed and secured, cleaning outdoor grills after use, and not leaving pet food out and accessible. In addition, do not feed stray animals as it has the potential to lure other animals to that feeding area and establishes a habit pattern that could potentially cause harm to an individual or the animal.
When should homeowners call Trutech?
When a wildlife issue presents itself, the sooner you can contact a wildlife removal specialist the higher the chances will be for a successful resolution of that problem. If an issue is left alone or unchecked, many times it can worsen and become a greater issue than if it was handled quickly and efficiently. Don’t delay-contact Trutech today!
